I’ve never written a review in my life, but this thing is expensive and a HUGE disappointent. Battery life is pathetic, as another reviewer mentioned. I guess it’s meant only for quick trips out of the room. I was hoping to be able to leave the AC adaptor in the bedroom for overnight and be able to use the battery while hanging out in other rooms. Not really possible. Base is narrow so monitor constantly falls over. The adaptor connection broke after some minor jostling caused by the aforementioned narrow base, but I’m glad because now I can buy something else. There seem to be a lot of “features” with this monitor, but it’s not very user friendly.

Here’s the deal… Battery life is really bad. I’m talking maybe 3-5 hrs. I went to batteries plus ([...]) and had them build a new AAA cell pack replacement with stronger batteries (1000mAh vs 850) and that maybe gave us an extra 30-1hr. Also the blue light on the front of the video monitor is a bit too bright, but it does not wake our son… yet.. (4 weeks old) Other than that the unit is great. We just wish that it would make it thru the night as it will make a SUPER loud beeping noises and WAKE you when the batteries are low.. So if you don’t mind leaving the handheld unit on the charger all night “every night” and ONLY unplugging it for 3-4 hours, then this is your unit. I emailed Safety 1st to get some info about the battery life and they have not responed.. It’s been almost 1 week, so this shows me what kind of Customer Support I’m going to be looking at if the unit ever needs fixing… (bad) Just one other thing to save you some time, I haven’t seen another unit that DOES NOT have issues with battery life……
Why can’t we get a digital VIDEO monitor that isn’t $300+ and can last 12+ hours?
Pros:
Easy, Easy, Easy
Alarm Clock, Time/Date, Easy Temp read out
Belt clip
Cons:
Slight Blue Light on Cam when using at night
Batery – 3-4hrs on standard battery (Battery Plus Upgrade needed)

This is our second attempt at a video baby monitor. The first (Mobicam) was returned because of unceasing static and interference in the audio.
MAJOR PROBLEM: Parent unit dies without warning. It randomly goes completely unresponsive (no power, video or audio). Judging from other user reviews, this is not an isolated issue. There seems to be a major electronic design flaw.
Otherwise…
Pros:
- decent video quality (quite pixellated, but clear, no interference)
- one-touch video on/off with power-saving timer
- good sound quality (clear, no static)
Cons:
- battery life: I think ours is defective; it has less than an hour of charge and the charge indicator is always empty
- audio is not particularly sensitive (compared to standard audio-only units)
- poor craftsmanship (power button gets stuck, other buttons feel flimsy)
- clock feature would be nice if it didn’t reset every time the battery dies (which is often)
- display bar takes up too much of the screen
- no voice-activated video setting (the screen does not turn on when baby cries)
- power indicator light is too bright (on both parent & camera units)
Conclusion: Not recommended
Suggestions to manufacturers: Look to cell phone and other portable electronic technology (more reliable, better screens, lithium-ion batteries, clear audio, smaller packages).

My parent unit of the safety first prism monitor just went dead. Completely unresponsive. I’ve changed the batteries, plugged it in, tried pushing buttons and finally went through the instruction sheet and it will NOT power up. I’ve heard this many times about this monitor and other handhelds by safety first. Now I have my own personal experience to add to the reviews. We’ve owned this thing for about 3 mths. How disappointing and it wasn’t cheap either.
So now I’m back to constantly peeking in on my baby while I try to do chores. I should have saved my money and kept doing that anyway. We do have the safety first air something or other car seat. I can only hope that if we ever need it to perform that it won’t do the same as the monitor and just stop performing at the last minute.
I wouldn’t buy this product to replace my current useless one and I would suggest that no one else buys it either.
My summer monitor that is used for our older child is way better than this even though it’s not really portable.

The primary function of this device is to transmit video to a remote monitor and it does a satisfactory job of that. Its range is 200′ at most but I live in New York City where the amount of interference is very high so I’ll settle for that. Everything else about this device is shoddy and its design suggests that very little thought was put into it. Here’s a list of what I think are significant flaws.
TRANSMITTER DESIGN: It’s very light for its bulky size. There should be a clamp and a swan/flexible neck so the camera can be mounted on something like a crib and pointed in any direction you want. As it is, it has to sit on a flat surface – in my case that’s a table or the rail of the crib. For the latter the unit needs to be balanced ever so perfectly because even the very skinny power cord is enough to pull the unit over on account of it’s light weight and smooth underside.
RECEIVER DESIGN: The same problems I just mentioned also apply to the receiver. It seems very light for its size. The base is narrower than the rest of the unit and is also smooth, hard plastic. Keeping it upright and pointed in the right direction is difficult unless you wedge it between other objects. Again the power cord, flimsy as it is, is enough to spin this thing right around with even the slightest jostle. A wide set of three legs with rubber stoppers would do wonders for this device. Also, the buttons are cheap and too small for someone with larger hands.
VOLUME: Most audio devices have a scale from one to ten, this device’s scale looks more like this: 0, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10. Which is to say it’s either silent, loud or louder. Yes, I want it loud when I’m asleep so that it wakes me up but if I’m reading or doing some other quiet activity I don’t need every creak or slight noise echoing through my apartment. Which brings me to my next complaint:
AUDIO DELAY: The reviewer that likened it to poltergeist got it perfectly. The offset causes everything that’s picked up by the transmitter to have it’s own echo. Sometimes a sound can be heard live, then the echo is heard, then the monitor picks up the echo and “re-echos” it. I feel like I’m in the Swiss Alps.
BATTERY LIFE: It’s much shorter than I expected. It seems like they went overboard in cutting manufacturing costs.
Anyway, I hope there are better devices out there. In the meantime this one will to the job, barely.
