I was looking for a kid carrier for my 2.5 years old girl, so that we can go hiking together. I tried out a few different carriers, and the Deuter ones definitely are the best (Kid Comfort II and III). I could easily and safely put the carrier on my shoulders with my girl inside. It is fully adjustable, but yet very easy to use. The quality of the shoulder harness and hip belt is very good. If you used one of those big backpack for camping before, you would know how a high quality hip belt and adjustable shoulder harness make a huge difference.
I chose Kid Comfort III over Kid Comfort II because it has a built-in sun shade, something that is a must since I’ll be using it for hiking.
And, my girl loves this carrier. She just couldn’t stop laughing the first time using it. When she tried the Kelty FC 3.0 carrier, she looked scared when I lifted up the carrier to my shoulders.
I have used this carrier twice, so far there is nothing to complain. I really enjoy hiking with my girl. She enjoys seeing things around, and I enjoy doing exercise while she is safe behind my back.

I want to begin with the high point. This is so comfortable I find myself loath to take it off. I find myself thinking up places to go where I would need to carry the baby in the backpack. I have even decided to dispense with the baby sitter and take the baby ballroom dancing–I can MOVE in this thing and I am balanced so well that moving backwards and forwards, side to side, and even up and down is comfortable in this thing. So I am delighted with this.
It is VERY adjustable. So much so that I will have to add to this review after my next visit to my sisters who are shorter than my five foot three and three quarter inches. We are going to try it with the two year old on her also short mother. Based on how I have it adjusted, and the other options for length of torso and ease of adjustment, I think it may work for her too.
I had NO trouble putting the baby in the carrier and getting it on myself without help. I also was able to get out of it safely. No problems at all.
The adjustments were fairly easy to make, once someone showed me where all the straps were, I was able to adjust it completely without further help. I especially like that the snaps for getting her in and out are all orange.
I love the five point harness. I leaned over while watching in a mirror to see if there was any sign of her possibly coming loose. I did not bend past 90 degrees but I think I could have landed on my head and not lost her out of the carrier–she is 8 months and small for her age–so when she gets bigger I will feel even more sure of her security. So if I trip over my own feet and land on my hands and knees, I feel she will be safe and stay in the carrier.
I like the height of the back of the carrier, it makes me feel that if I did fall she is at least somewhat protected from hitting her head. Certainly better protected than any carrier I used in the past!
Then there is the integrated sun shade, rain shade. It stores nicely in its own pocket and is large enough to do the job. I may be a silly girl and add some fringe. I felt that it had enough support in it to keep it up and in place even in a stiff breeze.
I like the pad in front of the baby, so did the baby. I like the pockets on either side within her reach, and I like the fact that you can add a water bladder to this pack. I like the size and placement of the other pockets. In particular, I liked the smaller pocket up higher, it just seems like the perfect place to put small items. The larger bag under the seat is a good size and should handle diaper bag items and changes of clothing and snacks without difficulty.
I don’t know why anyone would want a stroller when they can use one of these instead. With this, baby and I can go anywhere my feet can take us.
Did I mention that once I had it on and my child realized how much more she could see, she was happy? She was, very happy. vocalizing happy. smiling at everyone happy. yup, happy kid.
I’ll probably find many other nice things to say about this carrier. It is a worth while investment. And the people at REI were very helpful to me in making sure it would fit.
So, why did I give it only four stars? First, because I couldn’t give 3/4 of a star. Second and ONLY complaint: I don’t like the zipper on the bag underneath–and I am nit picking to come up with that!

I bought this carrier because we were going to Europe for a few weeks, and remembered from the last time I was there the cobblestone streets, old multiple story buildings, and public transit weren’t suited for a stroller. My daughter’s a little over a year, so the Baby Bjorn seemed a little small and it hurt our backs anyway, so wasn’t viable as an option for single use anyway. So I started doing some research and narrowed my choice to two carriers, this and the Kelty FC 3.0. I’m really happy I went with the Deuter.
I haven’t uploaded pictures in a long time, but as I was trying to internet shop for a carrier, it was frustrating that Deuter nor Kelty had detailed pictures of their products, and the nearest REI is about 90mins north or south of me. I could find a few pictures people posted on Amazon and REI, but nothing truly detailed. So, I hope they help in your buying decision.
As I tried to show in the pictures, there’s no way this carrier isn’t adjustable to your body. Even if you’re a hunchback, there’s an adjustment to fit your hunch. The waist strap is long, so if you have some extra padding in your hips, don’t worry it’s going to fit you. Even for the baby, you can adjust the carrier so much that if you wanted your child reclined to about 65 degrees…though I don’t know why you’d want to do that, but you can.
Using it has released a new lease on getting out and about with a child. When I first got this, I put my daughter in it on the couch and was able to get it on my back without issue. I can even get her from the floor onto my back and down by myself, though it’s less stressful with another helping you.
Storage is amazing, I put LeapFrog My Pal Scout into the lower bag and there was enough room for him to have a friend. When I actually packed to leave, I managed to fit a Swiss Army Packing Cube & Pouch(minus the pouch) I used to fit diapers, wipes, and snacks and this PDVK-10 7-Inch 10-Inch In Car Portable DVD Player Case (Black) to fit the DVD player and movies. The upper isn’t a bag so much as it’s organizing pockets. I haven’t decided if this is a plus or minus but, I was able to fit this Caselogic SLRC-202 Medium SLR Camera Bag (Black) in the center upper pocket. The Kelty’s upper is a bag, a removable one, but as such it sticks out further making you more bulky. This wouldn’t matter if backpacking, maybe, but for city use, it’s a problem. However, it’s practical to have a removable bag for use as a diaper bag.
OK, last subject – travel. Like I said, we bought this to travel with primarily. No where on the Deuter website did it indicate how this could be used for air travel – meaning if it had to be bag checked, gate checked, or carry on. I assumed it would be gate check because the Deuter website states it’s good for airport travel…well, that’s a little further than bag check. But to my surprise, we were able to carry on ours AND it fit in the overhead compartment…albeit, the longer compartment. Since children board first, I’m sure (if they let you carry on) you can find one of the longer compartments to stick this in.
As for how my daughter feels about it, now she climbs into it when she sees me putting stuff in it. That works for me.
All in all, this is one of the best child related purchases I’ve made and should have done it sooner.
One last thing: we bought this from Backcountry Edge, but bought directly from them. Their shipping is really fast and you save a serious amt of money buying directly from them.

Edit: The one thing I’ve come to dislike about the pack are the zippers. They’re really inadequate for this bag, they’re small and difficult to close when in use. If this pack had Kipling-like zippers, it would be a huge plus.
