“Britax Boulevard: Built Like a Tank, but one MAJOR Flaw…” 2010-01-19
    By jambrose (Boston, MA)
I’m amazed that this seat has not been recalled. The strap tightening mechanism frequently jams as the steel bracket (connecting all the straps) behind the seat twists and gets snagged on the plastic frame of the seat. When this happens, the seat is completely disabled and straps cannot be tightened around your child. This requires complete removal of the car seat from the car to fix — a total nightmare when standing in the rain/snow with 35lb screaming 2-year old in your hands. Once you know how to fix the seat it can be done rather quickly; however, I DREAD the frantic calls I receive from my wife when the seat strands her and my son in some remote shopping center parking lot.

It’s a shame because the build quality of this seat is otherwise outstanding, and when the straps work I have no doubt this is one of the safest seats on the market. I would still recommend the seat if you’re the type of person (and I hope you’re not) that drives a mini/hybrid/hatch-back car with kids in the back — this seat can clearly take a hit.

I also own a Roundabout seat that operates flawlessly, and highly recommend that seat for ease of use. However, I doubt the Roundabout can take a hit as well as the Boulevard. Thus, we put the Roundabout in my wife’s SUV and I have the Boulevard in my Accord.

Hope you find this review helpfull; it’s been on my mind for awhile…

    Good luck & Cheers!

     “Disappointed” 2010-01-12
    By Book Smart (Buffalo, NY)
I researched a ton of car seats and settled upon this one after reading many glowing customer reviews, consumer report reviews, and Baby Bargain reviews.

Here are the good things about this very expensive car seat:

    1. The best thing about this car seat is its safety rating.

    2. The head support/security is great, plus it gives our little one a place to rest her head. I was worried she would not be able to see out the window b/c the head support would be in her way, but she can easily look out the window.

    3. The car seat also comes in many cool cover patterns.

    The bad things:

    1. The “no twist” straps get REALLY twisted and are hard to untwist. This is really annoying and I find that it is a safety issue b/c sometimes the twisted straps do not allow us to tighten the straps appropriately.

    2. The strap between the child’s legs is short, so sometimes it is hard to connect the harness. It is not hard in warm weather, but in cold weather when our child is bundled up, it is really difficult and very frustrating.

We need to buy a car seat for child #2. We will not be purchasing another Britax b/c of the strap issues. It’s too bad– I had such high hopes for this very expensive car seat.

     “Compared to the Roundabout” 2009-12-31
    By C. Langlois
I bought this car seat because my 2 year old son is outgrowing his Britax Roundabout, which we LOVE (have 2 – one for each car, and NO complaints). His shoulders are AT the top slot of the Roundabout, and since their shoulders are supposed to be at or below the straps when forward facing, I thought I should look into a bigger seat. Since the Boulevard is supposed to be for children up to 49 inches and 65 pounds, I thought my 39 inch, 37 pound 2 year old would have room to grown in the Boulevard (the Roundabout is for kids up to 40 inches and 40 pounds, so it makes sense that he is almost too big for that). Well, I was very unhappy to find that the highest slot position in the Boulevard (with the headrest all the way to the highest position with the straps as far out as possible) is only one inch higher than the Roundabout. There is NO way this seat could possibly hold my son until he is 49 inches (unless of course the only place he grows is in his legs – if his trunk gets any longer, this seat won’t work because the straps will be below his shoulder level). When I called Britax they said I should have measured his seated shoulder height first – I have 3 children and have used MANY car seats but never heard of such a thing, but maybe I’m ignorant. I didn’t see any mention of shoulder height in the product description either. The only things that are mentioned are height and weight. My second problem has to do with installation in my Ford Expedition. The latch system is different than in the Roundabout, and it’s supposed to be above a certain line when forward facing. Both my husband and I found it impossible to tighten the seat so the latch was above the line. We could tighten the seat, but the latch was not in the recommended location. We had the same problem in my mini-van. Britax was not able to help us over the phone. We will have to pay about $65 to ship this seat back – it simply won’t work for us. Very disappointed.

“We Have Two, Like Them A Lot” 2009-12-15
    By Elizabeth (United States)
I spent quite some time researching car seats for our son. In short, this seat was great, we loved it and ordered another one after using it for a month or so, so that there would be one for each car. If you want all the details of why we liked or did not like it, read on.

As an infant our son used the Graco Snug Ride, which was convenient because we could get him in and out of the car easily and not wake him up while he was sleeping. But after using this one once he outgrew the Graco, at age four months (he was a tall baby), I wished we would have used this all along, even as a newborn. We tethered it to the front seat (so it is facing backward, hooked in by LATCH and tether) and it feels sooooo much more sturdy than the Snug Ride for babies. The little flaps on the side make it nice and snug even for small infants (although not preemies).

    Things we like:

-Mostly, that based on research and how it seems to us, it appears to be one of the safest seats. It feels sturdy, feels like there is lots of padding, and also like it is snug. I know, of course, how it feels doesn’t mean it is the safest, but to a certain extent (after the feel of the Snug Ride), I think there is something to it. I think there is a good reason that this has the reputation as the safest seat.

-I like the rubber things on the straps. It helps you make sure it is tight enough, fitting well, and straight.

-Five point harness is a plus.

-Our boy can ride in this thing until he is ready to go to a regular seat. It goes up to 65 pounds, so no need to buy booster seats.

-You don’t have to rethread to change the height of the straps – thus, can adjust when coat or outfit is more or less bulky.

    Things we like less:

-This is not a small seat. It does fit in our subcompact and compact car, so that is great (goes in the middle in back, rear facing). However, my husband, who is a shorter guy, can’t put his seat back as far as he would like while driving. If a taller person is driving, it might be a tight fit in a subcompact or compact car. I’m not sure how it would work if we have to fit two re-facing seats in the car if/when we have another little one. So for small cars, it is a bit of a tight fit in the middle and not sure it would fit on either side.

-Sometimes it is hard to loosen or tighten the straps evenly without having to make them both completely loose and then retighten completely. Not a big deal for me, but if you aren’t careful, one side can be quite tight and the other loose and then if there would be an accident, the child wouldn’t be properly constrained. Just something to keep an eye on.

    Overall, though A+.

“Not a good buy for the money” 2009-12-06
    By Chris (Minneapolis, MN)
After struggling with these seats (we have twins) for 2 years now, I have to say there are design flaws I did not expect in a seat so expensive. The two main problems we’ve faced are the latches, which are set back, hard to get out from under the seated child, and which do not latch well at all, requiring both tongs and great pressure to set. The other problem occurs with the adjustable straps, as they constantly get caught somewhere in the inner workings of the seat, and even when working, take a great force to pull the slack. For the money, I am frustrated and disappointed. As noted, these seats are two years old now and these problems may have been fixed by now.

“Great car seat for small cars” 2010-08-10
    By Rae O (New York)
I purchased this seat for my Subaru Impreza; which has a small backseat. I have this seat rear-facing in the center seat and the install is nice and tight; the seat fits great. My daughter loves riding in it and always seems comfortable. When she falls asleep, her head doesn’t fall forward at all. We love it so much we bought the same one for my husband’s car (also Subaru Impreza.)

If you have a larger car, I would get a larger seat (like the Boulevard) since it has higher weight/height limits. But, for compact cars, this seat is great.

The Onyx color also looks really sharp!

By S. Rocha (n.b., ma usa)
It may seem expensive, but it’s the best car seat. The baby sits comfortably, he can fall asleep without having his head falling forward. It is also so easy to install from car to car. I love this seat. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a car seat.

     “Perfect for military brat!!” 2010-06-25
    By military family
We love this car seat. When my son was 3 months we purchased it, his infant carrier was too big for the back seat of Suzuki Aerio (not the hatch back). We took a display model for a test drive and fell in love with it right away. The compact size of this seat and its amazing safety ratings sealed the deal.

About a year later my spouse was assigned overseas. My son and I were unable to travel at the same time as him. When you combine this carseat with the Go Go Babyz travelmate it is a complete success. On our long 8.5 hr flight across the big pond my son slept like a dream. I was worried about installing this seat on the three different airplanes we traveled on. It was more than easy, i would ask the flight attendants for the seatbelt extension and in minutes the seat was in the airplane. On the longest flight there were a few other military families with the car seats that have wheels on them and are “travel” carseats, they struggled trying to get inbetween the seats and had to pick up the entire carseat to go through the isles. I was able to wheel my son in his Diplomat carseat with GoGO Babyz attachment right to our isle with no problems. Durring the flight two of the toddlers in the other car seats were cranky and cried alot. this was an overnight flight. My son was able to sleep like a dream, this was mostly because of the head rest.

The head rest on this carseat is amazing. It provides much needed protection and comfort. There was one instance where my husband and I borrowed a friends truck to move some large furniture. Our friend had a kid about the same age and so already had a carseat in the back seat. We figured our son would be ok for the roughly 3hrs we would have the truck. About forty five minutes into our drive, when he would normally have fallen alseep, he was restless and crying. Every time he tried to rest his head on the carseat (w/o the “wings”) he would drift off and then wake up as we hit a bump or if there was a turn in the road. He acted like he was trying to find his headrest by rocking his head from side to side and then crying when he couldn’t find it. After this “testing” a different carseat, my husband and I fully realized how amazing the Diplomat was. We never again used a different carseat on him.

**Warning child safety rant starts here**

on a side note. If you are considering this carseat and are apprehensive about the price tag, chew on this.

This is YOUR CHILD. The price of the car seat or the missing eddie baur label should NOT be a major factor. My husband and I are baffled at the carseats we see in other peoples super “safe” cars. Parents at times can focus soo much on how safe the car is, but fail to continue looking into making the car safe for thier new arrival. Your childs carseat is a continuation of your car’s safety. Cute does not always equal safe. When I see a nice newer car and an adorable iffy carseat in the backseat, it just makes me wonder. You spend soooo much on your safe car and adorable accessories but forget to make traveling in the car safe for your child. If you really want to see some shocking footage just check out sarseat safety trials on U-Tube. See how “safe” graco and eddi bauer carseats really are.

Very easy to install and adjust. Also, despite appearing enormous, it has a reasonable footprint, which is good if (like us) you do not have a massive back seat.

     “Awful customer service” 2010-10-12
    By Malvern Momma (Malvern, PA)
I purchased this product from Costco, and after about a year of use, the locking latch that sits between your kid’s knees and locks the seat belt in place was not functioning properly, such that the belt would not lock unless you manually forced the latch into the lock position. I called and emailed Britax. They told me on the phone that since the warranty had expired, it was likely that there was nothing that could be done. They never responded to my email. Thank goodness that Costco has an excellent return policy.

     “Great product” 2010-10-06
    By Peace unto you (Here)
Excellent product. Fits very secure and is very comfortable for my 16 month old son. I debated buying this as I heard that children are much safer in a rear facing seat for as long as possible, but he was so fussy and it was difficult to drive with him. Now he can see out of the window and rides are much more enjoyable. He has been in this seat for about 3 months now and we love it. It is a difficult seat to take in and out of your car, but that is the only negative thing I can say about this. Definitely worth the $.

     “Bad Instructions!” 2010-10-06
    By Iroquois
Horrible instructions, I almost gave up and wanted to return this half way through the installation. But once installed, it feels stable and my kid is comfortable in it.

“LOVE IT!! Don’t waste your money on a cheaper car seat!” 2010-10-02
    By LB4
I purchased my first Britax Marathon 4 years ago for my oldest son. We LOVE this car seat. Before purchasing this seat, we bought several cheaper seats (graco, evenflo etc.) All of them went back to the store within 3 days. They were difficult to get a super tight installation, the harness straps easily got twisted and sometimes didn’t tighten evenly, and my son just didn’t look as comfortable in these seats. Finally, due to the great reviews we splurged on a Marathon. We should’ve just started there in the first place. This seat has a SUPER tight fit in every vehicle we have ever put it in, feels like it is very solidly constructed, has a high height/weight limit (my 4.5 year old who is in the 80th percentile still rides in it, whereas he outgrew a cheaper car seat we had purchased for Grandma over 6 months ago), the straps rarely get twisted, they always adjust evenly, we LOVE the velcro on the sides of the car seat to hold the straps out of the way while you are putting the child in, and my son has looked comfortable in it from 4 months old right through 4.5 years old. We hope to get another year out of this seat before our son outgrows it and moves to a booster (we will be purchasing a Britax booster). It has exceeded our expectations in every way. We are a young family on a budget, but I would buy this again in a heartbeat for safety and ease of use. It is well worth the extra money for a fantastic, easy to use, and safe product that you will use DAILY for several YEARS! We recently purchased a second Britax for our new baby, can’t wait to use it!

“Great seat – A little hard to install” 2010-09-27

This is a great seat in terms of build quality and safety. Worth the money.

Only negative was that it was not very easy to install. The instructions are not very good. But once installed, it stays in place very well unlike some other seats I have used.

“good car seat however, it sits up high” 2010-09-22

My daughter is very tall so it is difficult to get her into the car without hitting her head in the ceiling of the car even though we have a SUV. Otherwise, it is good car seat.

My son easily converts from britax chaperone to britax boulevard. he was only 5 months when he begins to not fit on the chaperone so i did lots of research and read lots of review when i finally bought the boulevard and i was so happy with it. My son is very comfortable sitting on it, i have a small SUV but it still fits good even if we have to move the seat since my husband has long legs. I purchased another 1 for my husbands car which is a van and it was perfect for it. The belt wont twist unlike the other car seats that i have tested before. easy to place on the car and 5 point harness makes a big difference. I would recommend this product to anybody who asked me on whats the best carseat. It is pricey but worth it.

“Everything we were looking for!” 2010-09-14
By Darcy Knight (Eugene, OR United States)
We have had this car seat for about 6 months and love it! Our criteria for a car seat was: extra safety features, easy to install (because we switch it between two cars), and comfortable for him to sleep in. I love the added side padding and it doubles as a headrest for when he is napping. It is fairly easy to install, especially with the Latch system. it is a little more challenging to use a seat belt due to the small space the seat belt goes through, but doable. It is easy to adjust and the seat belt does not get wrapped around and tangled every time we take him out, which was an issue with our last car seat. It is big, but we have no problem fitting it in my Outback. We have only used it forward facing though, which could make a difference. I would definitely recommend it!

My wife and I really like this car seat. It is so much easier to use than the Graco seat we were using before. Our daughter seems to like it much more to because it has more room for her.

     “Great Buy” 2010-08-31
    By J. Randall (California)
Our kids seem to be very comfortable riding in these seats. Being that Consumer Reports rates them highest in safety the comfort was a great bonus. They weren’t difficult to install and seem to be made of great quality materials and construction. The only set-back for us is that our kids’ heads flop forward when they sleep in them, (which is what I hear of all non-infant seats). It would be nice to be able to recline them just another inch but I guess that wouldn’t be safe in a collision.

“Your child is safe with Britax” 2010-10-10

When shopping for a convertible car seat for my son, I decided that it was much more important to me to buy a seat that had very good review and high safety ratings. I splurged a bit (for my conservative budget) and bought the Britax Roundabout convertible car seat, and I have not been disappointed.

I absolutely LOVE this car seat. It is built so well and is so sturdy. I feel so safe knowing that my son is in a Britax. The seat belts are great because they adjust and loosen very easily, so it is very easy to get my son in and out. I love the handy velcro on the seat belt which holds it out of the way when you put your child in. My mom bought a more inexpensive car seat for when she is watching my son, and while hers seems to work alright, I am always frustrated with the seat belt, which is VERY hard to tighten and loosen. The cheaper models I have seen are also a LOT more flimsy than the Britax.

When shopping for a car seat, safety is most important! Do your research, and I think you will find, like I did, that Britax is definitely the way to go!

This is a great seat. It fits in my Cadillac CTS and my son seems comfortable in it. Super easy to install and use. It looks great too. I also have a marathon in my husband’s truck and that is great too. I opted for the smaller one for my car and am very happy. Plus I know that our other kids will be able to use it so I don’t feel bad not opting for the marathon or roundabout 50 as this will be a great in-between seat to use.

This looks and feels like a comfortable and solid carseat. Read all the reviews on Consumer Reports…This is well worth the price!

“We love this car seat!” 2010-07-16

This is a great car seat! We bought it because it was listed on a website to fit our minivan (we previously had problems with our other car seat fitting behind the passenger seat in our van rear-facing. It is much nicer than the Alpha Omega and Gracos we own. We purchased it because one of the colors was on clearance, which made it a great value and we’re hooked. I wish we could afford to replace all of our carseats with this one (we have 4, 2 in each vehicle). It is easy to install and my son loves it. Britax thought of a lot of small things that make using this car seat much easier.
